Now that the bugs are fixed, I think Vay is great. Its easily one of the best and most underrated RPGs on the iPhone.
A little buggy, the flare and flame spells always crashes the game if they kill the opponent. Also, the experience gained from the monsters is a little bit exxagerated, what makes you level up too fast, making the game too easy. Other than that its pretty nice :)
Add a D-PAD, because the current controls are very annoying and a huge pain to navigate.
Needs a D-Pad update. Its not that I havent given the touch controls a chance, I have. They are just bad. Look forward to the inevitable update...
With the update this game runs fine. Touch controls are shakey & can use an update but other than that an awesome game & free. Love the option to change character names. Only gripe besides controls is that you cant see enemy health. Small but could really help with gam planing against a boss. All in all a great game
I am on the fence on this one. Vay is a good game in its own right but this port is less than stellar. Before I get into that I want to point out that I own the Sega CD version, so thats my point of reference. The good: The story elements are still intact, and there is a lot to like about this game. The combat system is a solid standard fair. The music, (much like the rest of the game), shows its age, but its still good. The bad...: Where to begin... The controls are downright messy. I dont know why they thought that the point and move system was a great idea, but it just doesnt work for this game. You will end up spending a lot of time trying to click where you WANT to go and the game just takes it as a suggestion. It really needs a directional pad like so many ports already use. In fact lots of amenities that we are used to from iPhone ports are just simply nonexistent here in this title. The games graphics are quite blurry. Makes me wonder if they were trying to improve the quality or something. Regardless, they failed. Also there are quite a few graphical and sound bugs rife throughout the game. When I first started the game the sound didnt load and half the screen was black. Keep in mind I usually restart my phone when getting a new app. I had to restart the app to clear the bugs. It probably doesnt help that the new menus have contributed to some of the graphical issues I have witnessed. Which brings me to my next point... The downright ugly: Inventory management is messy. Instead of using the actual in game menus and graphics, they tossed that all out in favour of iPhone menus. Its so bad in fact that it really breaks the immersion factor. Common sense things, like being able to buy and sell multiple items dont seem to exist in this port. Nothing like playing an old rpg and being ripped out of the immersion by a crappy boggled down UI, coupled with the horrible point and go movement, sound and graphical errors. The bottom line is, even if you never played the original version, there is still too much going against it to recommend this to anyone. Yes there is a great game under the tonne of bad but a bad port is still a bad port, no matter how you slice it. The folks that are disregarding our opinions want to stick their heads in sand, thats fine, but our opinions are still valid and very much ring an unfortunate truth that they did a bad job. Even if the car looks pretty on the outside, it all means squat if the engine block is cracked and leakin oil. I also dont like saying this, since I know that programming is a deeply involved process, but these folks were downright L-A-Z-Y. The inventory UI is a prime example of that. These same people will be importing Lunar as well. After what I have seen thus far from this port, I do not have high hopes. Which is sad really, since I consider Lunar one of the best RPGs out there. UPDATE: bugs have been fixed (sort of), but the game desperately needs a control pad. Even the crappy one from Lunar would be nice. As it stands, its still incredibly difficult to move your character, which in turn, makes the game unplayable to me.
Oh man these are some bad controls. Also, the menus are really distracting and I have no sounds or music (iphone4 ios6). I got this to gauge whether I want Lunar on ios-based on Vay I will try and track it down for playstation instead
Why bother taking the player out of immersion with those iOS type menus? It takes away from the game. Outside of that, the game is pretty decent. I find all the anti-tax dialogue and treasure chest celebrations to be funny. I dont know any other game that says "cha-ching" when you get a treasure chest with a lot of gold. The only other flaw in this game I found is that magic can be useless; spark only costs 5 mp but does 220 to a boss whereas lightning costs 15 mp and does 260. The dialogue is pretty decent though it may be a little cliche (get special orbs, save the girl and stop the empire) and the cutscenes will give you nostalgia from the Sega CD. I also like the updated character animations in the battles.
With the update game now has acceptable controls, and is now VERY playable. Highly recommend on length allow.
Great game, terrible controls. Please add a D-Pad or virtual stick. Having to tap the screen where I want my character to go isnt accurate enough and it takes multiple taps just to have him talk to someone. Uninstalled until I can control him with better controls. Thanks for the awesome port though.
Played all the way through this to the end. (Double digit hours of play). Good game play and story and great value for the price. Controls took a little getting used to but once you figure them and the game mechanic out its a great JRPG for anyone who loves this genre.
WHAT HAPPEN TO THE CONTROLS?! WE NEED A D-PAD TO PLAY PLEASE UPDATE IT WITH A CONTROL PAD!
Ive read a lot of complaints about controls. You tap the tile you want to walk to / interact with, and you double tap in a direction to run that direction . Tap once to stop, then move to the newly tapped spot. Its not perfect, and itd be nice if there was a d pad/ action button option, but Ive gotten used to it 2 hours in and it feels natural now. Still the occasional missed click/tap, but Ive played many worse-controlled games out there. That said - devs, its worth architecting a dpad/buttons scheme to get the ratings up, cause this is a great game. Visual style is kinda weird/inconsistent, but I got used to it pretty quickly. Love the animated monsters and cheesy sega cd era cutscenes. Its decent difficulty side, but the encounter rate is wildly variable. Might go 3 screens, might go 3 steps. Overall, Im a few hours in and having a great time! Paid a buck - way worth it. Also, they redid the menu in a very apple settings-menu-ey way, and it looks bizarre but moves quickly. All in all, a ton of fun. Happy to support this dev - more like this please :)
I cant talk to the shops. Everytime I walk up to the counter and tap the person my avatar walks away:( help if you can please.
Lets see some more great games! Eternal blue, dark wizard, shining force CD. I love you !
It makes me sad that again this good is ruined by such a horrible control scheme. D-PAD!!!!
Like the game a lot, but the controls need a D-PAD. Thanks a lot for the attention.!!!!*****
It seems to be good, but...
iPhone 3G v4.2.1 Classic RPG game made virtually unplayable by poor control layout. Movement and interactions are done by tapping. Its the omni-touch button of ambiguity. While its easy enough to access exposed NPCs, the important vendors are utterly inaccessible. In fact double tapping on them consistently causes the player to move downwards. Repeated tappings upon the vendor, instead of causing the player to move back into proximity, only serves to drive the player farther away. A more dedicated control interface is necessary. Movement should have been done by the slightest tilt, and proximity interactions by touch. Ill see if it cant be beat without the ability to actually purchase anything, but doubtful.
