This is a great idea; Im a big fan of classic RPGs, and hope to see a lot more of them on the iPhone. I love this style of art; its reminiscent of classic Sega Genesis RPGs like Shining in the Darkness and Shining Force (I wouldnt be surprised if this was originally developed by the same team, though it feels like its older than the Shining* series, as the RPG system seems quite a bit less mature).
That said, from what Ive seen of this one so far, I have to say theyve done a pretty sloppy job porting this game to the iPhone. The Cocoa Touch (iPhone) portions of the UI are awkward and ugly, and some basic things are surprisingly difficult to do. For example, when youre buying new weapons or armor, you dont get any indication of which characters can equip them, or whether its better/worse than what you currently have (this is a standard feature included in pretty much all classic RPGs, and was probably in the original version of this game). If you dont want to waste money buying weapons/armor that turn out to be worse than what you already have, youll need a pen and notepad to write down and compare all the stats yourself. I may revise my review after Ive had a chance to get a little deeper into the game, but at the moment I would only recommend this to diehard RPG fans, since its the only RPG for the iPhone so far.
Surely someone can and will do a lot better at porting an old classic RPG to the iPhone.
